Margaret Olivia Slocum Sage has been called a trailblazer of philanthropy. She studied at Emma Willard School, then known as the Troy Female Seminary, and was a pupil of Emma Willard herself. Born in Syracuse, she was a teacher for a time in Philadelphia and then became the second wife of Russell Sage.
