Matinee Memories

"... people did support movies because it's the place where they could escape the reality and the hardness of their daily lives."
Virginia Bowers
Albany Historian

WMHT explores the Capital Region's collective movie memories with a new 60 minute documentary on the history of the movie theatres of
Albany, Schenectady, and Troy.

Local celebrities, historians and regular folks share their fond memories of "moviegoing" at our grand movie palaces, neighborhood theaters and drive-ins, from the end of the silent film era, the golden days of the movie palaces, the light hearted musicals of the depression years, the morale films of the war years and the heydays of our neighborhood theaters and drive ins.

Local celebrities sharing their memories include:

  • Don Weeks, WGY's morning radio host
  • William Kennedy, journalist, screenwriter and Pulitzer Prize-winning author
  • Joe Condon, Albany Broadcasting Company on-air personality
  • Kevin McKrell, lead singer of the Mckrells, songwriter
  • Ernie Tetrault, retired WRGB anchorman
  • Valerie DeLaCruz, singer/songwriter
