One out of five Americans has high blood pressure, but because there are no symptoms, many don't know they have it. Left uncontrolled, high blood pressure can lead to stroke, heart attack, heart failure or kidney failure. On the next health link we'll take a look at the treatment and prevention of hypertension. GUESTS: Anne N. Nafziger, M.D., M.H.S. As Co-director of The Clinical Pharmacology Research Center, Dr. Nafziger leads the Bassett Research Institute's efforts to evaluate new treatments for high blood pressure. She has secured federal and state research grants and served as the principal investigator for dozens of clinical studies, including those of breast cancer prevention, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and angina treatments. She has presented her research findings at national and international meetings. Dr. Nafziger has been with Bassett Healthcare for nineteen years. She currently divides her time between working with cardiology patients to prevent heart disease at the Bassett Clinic in Cooperstown and in leading the research activities of the Clinical Pharmacology Research Center. She earned her medical degree at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine in Cleveland, Ohio and her bachelors degree in biology from Goshen College in Goshen, Indiana. She also received a Master of Health Science in Epidemiology from The Johns Hopkins University School of Hygiene and Public Health in Baltimore, Maryland. Dr. Nafziger is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians and a member of many professional organizations, including the American Society for Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics, the American Heart Association Council on Epidemiology and Prevention, the American Heart Association Council on Nutrition, Physical Activity and Metabolism, the Medical Society of the County of Otsego and the Medical Society of the State of New York. Thomas C. Schumacher, D.O. Dr. Schumacher is a Clinical Nephrologist in Practice with Capital District Renal Physicians in Albany. He is also the Medical Director of the Capital District Dialysis Center and Director of Nephrology at St. Claire's Hospital in Schenectady. Dr. Schumacher earned his degree at the New York College of Osteopathic Medicine of New York Institute of Technology in Old Westbury, NY and his bachelors degree from Siena College in Loudonville, New York. Dr. Schumacher is a member of the American Medical Association, American College of Physicians and the Medical Society of the County of Albany. David G. Wolinsky, M.D. Dr. Wolinsky is a Cardiologist in practice with Prime Care Physcians. Dr. Wolinsky is a graduate of Columbia College and received his medical degree from Columbia University of physicians and Surgeons. Dr. Wolinsky completed his internship and residency at St. Luke's Hospital in New York City. He also completed a three year cardiology fellowship at St. Luke's Hospital. Dr. Wolinsky is Board Certified in Internal Medicine and Cardiovascular Diseases and Nuclear Cardiology. He is a fellow of the American College of Cardiology, a member of the Medical Society of the State of New York, the American Heart Association, and the Clinical Council of Cardiology. Dr. Wolinsky is a founding member of the American Society of Nuclear Cardiology. He is the Director of Nuclear Cardiology and the Clinical Research Department at Albany Associates in Cardiology and the Director of Cardiac Rehabilitation at St. Peter's Hospital in Albany, NY.
