TOPIC: Medical Complications of Eating Disorders
Terri Schiavo's case is tragic for many reasons, but it should also serve as a wake-up call that eating disorders can have serious and sometimes fatal consequences. Bulimia, Anorexia and compulsive eating are often thought of as psychological disorders but they can also cause permanent physical and neurological damage. On the next Health Link we'll examine the medical complications of eating disorders and meet some folks who are struggling with the effects of these devastating illnesses. GUESTS: Sharon Ann Alger-Mayer, MD Dr. Alger-Mayer is an Associate Professor of Medicine in the Division of Nutrition/Gastroenterology at Albany Medical College. She earned her medical degree from the State University of New York at Buffalo in 1983. She is a member of the Academy of Eating Disorders and the Capital Region Association for Eating Disorders. She has written numerous professional articles on the topic of eating disorders. Laurel Burns, MS, Ed.S., CEDT Laurel Burns is the co-director and co-founder of the Schenectady Center for Psychotherapy and Eating Disorders. She has been a clinician with a specialty in Eating Disorders since 1982. Laurel received her MS from Saint Bonaventure Univ. in Counseling, and her EdS in Counseling Psychology from the University of Missouri. She has presented numerous workshops to colleagues, educators and parents on eating disorder treatment and prevention. She has also presented prevention workshops at area public schools. Laurel has also been an adjunct faculty member at Russell Sage College, and a consultant and speaker at Union College. It began when she was in 7th grade. She spent her junior high and high school years in and out of treatment centers. The disorder has left this twenty two year old with osteoporosis, the bone thinning disease most often associated with post-menopausal women. Rebecca is majoring in nutrition at Russell Sage College and is looking forward to graduating in May. She now works at Fulmont Community Action Agency, Inc. overseeing their child and adult food programs. Web Resources
